CHRIS GROVES AUTUMN 2011 ART CLASSES
Horton Hayes Fine Art is pleased to announce our schedule of art instruction classes taught by Chris Groves. A classically trained painter, Groves has studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, the Colorado Academy of Art, the Loveland Art Academy, the Cottonwood Art Academy and the Denver Arts Student League. He has also enjoyed a private, two-year mentorship with artist Jay Moore.
CAST DRAWING & PAINTING
September 12th to October 17th
Monday Mornings 9-12
Level: Intermediate to Professional
Cost: $450
Cast Drawing & Painting classes teach students to work from classical sculptures, training the eye to perceive shapes, values, and proportion. Using the sight-size method, a plaster cast of a classical sculpture is reproduced in charcoal or oil. Exact measurements as well as matching exact shapes, values, and edges are emphasized. Instruction is given in the Atelier Studio tradition with the goal being a finished drawing or painting.
Classes will include:
Weekly Demos, One-on-One Instruction, Slide Show and Analysis of Casts and Drawing Techniques of the Old Masters, Materials Lecture, Types of Light Lecture, Open Studio Time.
STILL LIFE WORKSHOP
September 13th to October 18th
Tuesday Evenings 6-9 pm
Level: Intermediate to Professional
Cost: $450
Class will begin with topics on materials, composition, set up, and lighting. We will also cover various techniques of drawing along with preliminary charcoal sketches, value and color studies, and fundamentals of color mixing in order to prepare for the final painting. Classes will consist of lectures, slide analysis, and individual critiques while the student paints his or her own still life arrangement. Class topics will also include:
1. BUSINESS: Building Your Business as an Artist; Gallery Representation; Contractual Agreements and Internet Marketing; Self Promotion and Pricing your Art
2. HISTORY OF STILL LIFE PAINTING: Researching Past and Current Artists; Museum Visits and Analysis; Building Your Research Library
3. ONE-ON-ON INSTRUCTION/CRITIQUE
LANDSCAPE WORKSHOP
September 14th to October 18th
Wednesday Mornings 9-12
Cost: $450
The Landscape Program is designed for the artist seeking to improve their overall landscape painting skills and knowledge. Combining plein air sessions with studio analysis and classroom instruction, this program will give students the necessary abilities to continue on with their painting ambitions. Program Topics Include:
1. PAINTING: Learning to Paint Outdoors; Field Study; Studio Painting; Various Techniques (layering, alla prima)
2. BUSINESS: Building your Business as an Artist; Gallery Representation; Contractual Agreements and Internet Marketing; Self-Promotion and Pricing Your Art
3. HISTORY OF LANDSCAPE PAINTING: Researching Past and Current Artists; Museum visits and analysis; Building Your Research Library
4. ONE-ON-ON INSTRUCTION/CRITIQUE
A Materials List for each class will be provided upon registration.
A $100 non-refundable deposit is required upon registration. Payment may be by check or cash, but full payment or a credit card number must be provided upon registration to hold your space. Payment in full is due 10 days prior to commencement of classes. Your credit card will be charged with any tuition balance remaining if notification of cancellation is given less than 2 weeks prior to commencement of classes and such charge will be non-refundable, unless the class is filled prior to commencement of classes. This includes no-shows or withdrawals after classes have begun. Students will receive a full tuition refund in the event that Horton Hayes Fine Art cancels this class. Up to one make-up class can be scheduled in a subsequent class session or by attendance in another ongoing class.
